Now, we don't know if you'll be able to catch him & get his pot of gold, or whether he'll outwit you and run away, but he does have that shillelagh, so just be careful not to touch his beverage! This St. Patrick's Day's second desktop wallpaper has our little faerey friend atop a toadstool in the fairy ring he's planted. Now while toadstools may be good food for some fairy-folk, we don't recommend eating them for big people. But whether these wee-folk just cultivate their toadstools for fairy-food, to trade with savage berserkers, or for Indra to purify, we'll never really know. In the meantime though you can click on the Fairy Toadstool to download it and add a bit if magick to your desktop this St. Patrick's Day!

About St. Patrick

St. Patrick was born in Kilpatrick in Scotland in 385 A.D. and died on March 17th, 493 A.D. (Some sources cite his death in 460 or 461.)

When he was 16 years old Patrick was captured and sold into slavery to a chieftain named Milchu. During his slavery in Ireland, he was a shepherd for 6 years after which he escaped from his master. Patrick later became a priest and went on to preach throughout Ireland.

St. Patrick is best known for driving the snakes out of Ireland, and although there are no snakes there, those tales are most likley metaphors referring to St. Patrick converting the Celts and upsetting the Druids and Druidism.

The traditional icon associated with St. Patrick's Day, the shamrock, has it's root more in fact than his driving snakes out of Ireland. As the tale goes, St. Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock as an explanation of the Trinity.

St. Patrick's Day came to the United States and was first celebrated there in Boston in 1737. In some St. Patrick's Day celebrations, rivers and streams have even been dyed green.
