al_mic Set double-click preferences for faster archive extraction

You can set the default behaviour for double-clicking on files in Windows Explorer for faster and easier handling of archives directly in Windows Explorer.

The "Double-click Archive Behavior" on the Preferences' Context Menu tab lets you choose how you wish ALZip to behave when you double-click archives in Windows Explorer. There are 3 basic options available:

1. Open with ALZip
2. Extract to My Default Folder
3. Show Menu

egg_violet Open with ALZip

The first option is the default behavior for ALZip and the same as for any other software program for Windows. Double-clicking on an associated file type opens the program (i.e. ALZip).

egg_violet Extract to My Default Folder (Single Action Extraction)

The second option is used in conjunction with the drop down menu below it and allows you to immediately extract a file by double-clicking on it. Use the drop down menu to select your "My Default Folder". This is lightning fast as the job gets done immediately. Nothing on or off the Internet is faster.

egg_violet Show Menu

The third option, "Show Menu", displays a small context menu for you to choose an action from. This is faster than the first option, but not as fast as the second. The menu has the following items:

1. Extract to "\Filename"
2. Extract here
3. Extract to My Default Folder
4. Extract with ALZip
5. ALZip Self-Extractor (EXE)
6. Open with ALZip
7. Preferences

ALZip-Double-Click-Preferences-03

The first 3 options immediately extract the archive. For the third option, "Extract to My Default Folder", you need to have already selected this in the preferences (see below).

The fourth option opens the ALZip extraction dialog for you to specify extra options.

The fifth option allows you to create a self-extracting archive.

The sixth option opens the archive in ALZip as normal.

Lastly, the Preferences option displays the ALZip preferences opened to the Context Menu tab where you can change the double-click behavior.

egg_violet My Default Folder

In the "My Default Folder" drop down are five basic options:

1. Desktop: The current user's desktop
2. My Documents: The current user's "My Documents" folder
3. My Pictures: The current user's "My Pictures" folder
4. Current Folder: The folder that the archive is in
5. User selected folder (Nothing displayed by default)

There is also an additional option for each of those that creates a new folder with the file name of the archive, for a total of 10 options:

1. Desktop\Filename
2. My Documents\Filename
3. My Pictures\Filename
4. Current Folder\Filename
5. User selected folder\Filename

In the example screen shot below the user selected folder is the C drive root, i.e. "C:".

The option that you select from the drop down menu is available at the end of the list as both your selected folder, and with "\Filename" appended to your selected folder.

egg_violet Filename

Options that have "\Filename" appended to them are extracted to the selected folder with a new folder created and named the same as the archive file name. e.g. When "Desktop\Filename" is selected, and the extracted archive file name is "scrambled eggs", then the extracted files are found in "Desktop\scrambled eggs".

egg_violet User Selected Folder

To select a custom folder:

1. Check one of the "Extract to My Default Folder" or "Show Menu" radio checkboxes
2. Click the browse folder button ("...")
3. Select a folder and click OK

Your chosen folder appears twice in the drop down list, once as selected and once with the "\Filename" appendage. Choose one of the available options there.

egg_violet Duplicate Files

In order to maintain a smoother and faster work flow, using the double-click preferences does not prompt you to overwrite files when it creates a new folder (see "Filename" above).

Instead, ALZip simply creates a new folder named "Filename(1)" if a folder named "Filename" already exists. If "Filename(1)" also exists, then ALZip will create "Filename(2)", increasing the count by 1 each time it sees that a folder already exists.

ALZip will prompt you to overwrite files when it does not create a new folder for you.
