al_mic Context menus

ALZip supports tight Windows shell integration, so you can access ALZip from Windows Explorer and the Desktop. Tight integration also facilitates Drag & Drop interface functions in ALZip.

Explorer context menus are the fastest and easiest way to handle both new and existing archives. You can access them by clicking the right mouse button on files, folders, or selections of several files and folders. To create a new archive in Explorer, right-click and choose Add with ALZip from the context menu.

There are several customizable options for the ALZip context menu. Consult ALZip context menu preferences options for more information and help. The following example assumes that all available options are selected.

Tip: You can choose multiple files and folders by holding down the Shift or Ctrl key.

Tip: ALZip's Windows shell integration is minimally intrusive so it won't affect the performance of your computer. i.e. ALZip does not run in the background and take up valuable resources, e.g. RAM and CPU cycles.

There are four different basic context menu items: ALZip Self-Extractor (EXE), Add with ALZip, Add to 'File/Folder Name'.zip, Add to 'File/Folder Name'.zip and Email. You can customize which items appear in your context menus. For more information, consult ALZip context menu preferences options.

ALZip can create self-extracting executable (EXE) files from ALZ or ZIP files. When you choose non-archived files, ALZip first changes it into an ALZ or ZIP file and displays the ALZip Self-Extractor dialog box.

egg_violet Add with ALZip

Use this option when you want to specify details for files such as passwords and spanned archive options. See Add with ALZip for more information.

egg_violet Add to 'File/Folder Name'.zip

Use this option to quickly create archive files without specifying any options. When you select a file or folder to add, the archive file keeps the original name of the file or folder. For multiple files or folders, the folder name that the selected files or folders are in will be used. Should you archive files in the root directory of a hard drive where there is no folder name, the default file name is alsdream.zip.

egg_violet Add to 'File/Folder Name'.zip and Email

This feature lets you create, attach, and email an archive with a single click. This is available only when Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express are correctly configured.

Tip: For more information on Add, refer to Archiving in Explorer.

Tip: Right-click on a file, drag it to a blank space or folder where you want to create the archive, and let the right button go. The a context menu will prompt you with the above options. (You only need to move your mouse a couple of millimeters to use this function.)

ball_small Right-clicking on an archive

When you right-click on an archive, the regular four context menu items plus Extract with ALZip, Extract to current folder, Extract to respective folders*, and Extract to 'Path' will pop up.

egg_violet Extract with ALZip

This feature lets you configure Extract options through the Extract dialog box. Selecting multiple archives extracts them to the same folder.

egg_violet Extract to current folder

This option immediately extracts the files to the same folder (directory) that the archive is in.

egg_violet Extract to 'Path' / Extract to respective folders

Extract to 'Path' extracts all the files in the archive to a new folder with the same name as the archive.

* When you select multiple archives, the Extract to respective folders is displayed instead of Extract to 'Path'. Each archive is extracted into a new folder of the same name.

Tip: For more information, refer to Extracting in Explorer.

Tip: If you want to quickly extract files to a different folder, right-click on the file and while holding down the right mouse button, drag it to the folder where you want to extract the files and let go of the right mouse button. Click Extract to current folder on the context menu.

Tip: You can select multiple archives and extract them all at once by using the right mouse button context menu and selecting Extract to respective folders.

egg_violet ALZip Self-Extractor

ALZip creates executable files by converting ALZ or ZIP files. These are particularly useful when you want to give someone a compressed file, but don't know if they have a compression utility like ALZip.

egg_violet Add with ALZip

Use this feature when you want to specify details about how an archive is configured. Some of the available options are password protecting an archive and archive spanning. See Add with ALZip for more information.

egg_violet Add to 'File/Folder Name'.zip

This quickly creates an archive with the same name as the file, or if there are multiple files, the same name as the folder the files are in. If you are archiving files in the root directory of a hard drive, the default file name is alsdream.zip.

Tip: For more information on archives, refer to Archiving in Explorer.

Tip: You can customize which context menu items appear by clicking Options, Preferences, and then clicking on the Explorer tab.

ball_small Right-clicking on blank space in Explorer

Right-clicking on blank space (anywhere that you don't see a file) in Explorer displays the New folder context menu item.

New folder

Simply click New folder to create one ('directory' and 'folder' refer to the same thing). The default folder name will be a species of bird. New folder functions the same as New > Folder in Windows Explorer. Using the ALZip New folder function is simply much faster and more convenient than the traditional Windows Explorer option - one click as opposed to clicking, repositioning your cursor, and waiting for a flyout menu.

ball_small The Double-Click Context Menu

As of ALZip v7.0, you can choose to have ALZip display a fast context menu for you when you double-click on archives in Windows Explorer. See Setting Double-Click Preferences for information on configuring your options and see Extracting by Double-Click for information on using the functionality. Click the screen shot below for information on the double-click context menu.
