egg_violet Columns

Select the columns that you want to appear in the Details file listing (under View on the toolbar) in ALZip. You can also use your mouse to resize and "hide" columns.

egg_violet View

Customizes how the file list is displayed in ALZip.

Full row select - ALZip's default action is to use the Windows Explorer style of file selection, requiring that the file name itself be clicked. This option allows you to click anywhere on the file information row to select it.

Grid lines - Displays grid lines to separate rows and columns.

Auto-highlight - Highlights files as you move the mouse cursor over them. This is primarily a visual tool. Try it to see how you like it.

egg_violet Default archive format

Select the default archive format. You can choose ALZ or ZIP. ZIP is selected by default. This is a global change, so if you select ALZ as your default archive format, your right-click context menu items will read like "Add to Example.alz", etc.

egg_violet Show toolbar

Determines whether to display the ALZip toolbar or not. As the toolbar is simply for your convenience, removing the toolbar may be useful if you wish to conserve screen space. But then how could you ever say goodbye to those adorable Eggheads?

egg_violet Show status bar

Determines whether to display the Status bar at the bottom of the ALZip window.

egg_violet Smart extract for tar.gz/tgz

TAR, Z, GZ, TAZ, and TGZ files are often found on Unix-based Internet sites. The TAR format does not provide compression; it is used only to group files. GZ and Z files are gzip files and cannot contain multiple files. So, to compress multiple files on UNIX systems, people first create a group of files, a TAR file, and then compress the TAR file with the gzip program. These files have a .tar.gz or .tgz extension. ALZip's Smart extract for tar.gz/tgz function provides full extraction in one simple step, rather than having to extract the GZ and then extract the TAR. Refer to .tgz file format for more information.

egg_violet Show Folder Tree

Shows or hides the folder tree view in ALZip.

egg_violet Show Recent Files in Menu

Shows or hides files recently accessed by ALZip.

egg_violet Show Tip of the Day

The ALZip Tip of the Day has many useful tips on how to get the most out of ALZip. Tips range from beginner level to advanced. Some tips have fun extra information just to put a smile on your face~! :-)

ball_small File Associations tab

zip-preferences-file_associations_01

Determines which icons are displayed in Explorer. You can customize which icons individual formats use with this option.

You can also change file associations for ALZip here. i.e. If you want ALZip to be your default application for a specific archive format, you can set that here.

The file that the icon resides in is found under Associated icon file. If you are using an ALZip icon, the file and path will be followed by a comma and a number. The number is an index. For example, the ALZ icon is the first icon in the ALZip.exe icon store and ACE is the second. You can use any icon from any icon file or icon store.

egg_violet Associate with ALZip

Select a file type from the file extension browser on the left, check this box, and click OK to make ALZip the default program to open files of that type.

egg_violet Change icons

Select a file type from the file extension browser on the left and click the Change icons button. The Change Icon dialog will appear. Choose a new icon from the current icon store or click Browse to locate a new icon or icon store. After selecting an icon store (such as an EXE or DLL), you will be brought back to the Change Icon dialog box. Select an icon and click OK.

egg_violet Reset to ALZip defaults

Click this button to reset all file associations and icons to the ALZip defaults.

egg_violet Associate CD image files

Check this to open CD image files with ALZip.

ball_small Context Menu tab

Double Clickzip-preferences-context-menus_01

Use the Explorer tab to set how you want ALZip to appear in your right-click context menu. Context menus make creating and extracting files incredibly quick and easy.

egg_violet Context Menu Items

Specifies which context menu items are available when right-clicking on archive files in Explorer.

egg_violet Default Menu Items

Specifies which context menu items are available for non-archive files.

egg_violet Power Extras

Specify additional options for Windows Explorer context menus.

Create new folder: Includes the option to create new folders with one click on your right-click context menu. New folders created this way initially have bird names. For information about how to enable/disable this option, please see the section on Bird Folder Names

zip-new-folder-quick-menu_01

ALZip Self-Extractor (EXE): Includes the option to create self-extracting files directly from context menus. ALZ and ZIP files are directly transformed to EXE files. Other non-archive files are first transformed to ALZs or ZIPs and then to EXE format.

Add and Email: Includes the option to archive and email directly from Explorer context menus. This option only works if a supported email application such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express is properly installed and configured.

egg_violet Use context menu

Uncheck this option if you don't want to use ALZip in context menus.

egg_violet Cascaded context menus

This checkbox controls whether ALZip Explorer context menu items are displayed in the main context menu or are cascaded. A cascading menu is the same as a flyout menu.

egg_violet Double-Click Archive Behavior

This special section of functionality unique to ALZip has its own dedicated section. Please see Setting Double-Click Preferences for more information.

ball_small Folders tab

zip-preferences-folders_01

The Folders tab allows you to set preferences for where files are extrated to and which folder is used for temporary files.

egg_violet Default Extraction Folder

These options determine the default folder that ALZip automatically lists in the Extract to field in the Extract dialog box. You can always type over the default folder name or select a different folder from the folder list if you wish.

Open archive folder: ALZip lists the name of the folder containing the open archive in the Extract to field. For example, if the archive D:\archive\estsoft.zip is open, ALZip will list Extract to D:\archive\ in the context menu.

Filepath\filename\ folder: This is the most commonly used option. With this, ALZip creates a new folder with the same name as the archive file. The new folder is created in the same folder as the original archive. For example, if the archive D:\archive\estoft.zip is open, ALZip will list Extract to D:\archive\estsoft\ in the context menu.

Last folder used: When this is selected, ALZip extracts files to whatever the last folder it extracted files to was. For example, if you last used the D:\estsoft\ folder, ALZip will list Extract to D:\estsoft\ in the context menu.

User defined folder\filename\: This is similar to the Filepath\filename\ folder option. ALZip extracts the files to the default folder that you specify under User defined extract folder and creates a new folder inside of it with the same name as the archive that you are extracting from. For example, if you set the User defined extract folder as D:\A\L\Z\i\p\ and extract files from an archive in the My Documents folder called estsoft.zip, ALZip will list Extract to D:\A\L\Z\i\p\estsoft\.

egg_violet User defined extract folder (browse)

Use this to set the default folder to save files in when the User defined folder\filename\ folder option is selected.

egg_violet Temporary Files Folder

Temporary archive files are created in the folder that you specify. This option is particularly useful when you are updating a large archive and there is not enough room on the destination drive for both the original archive and the updated archive. This is most likely to occur when you are working with removable media (e.g. Jaz® or Zip® drives, floppy diskettes).

Windows Temp folder: Creates temporary files in the Windows Temp folder. e.g. C:\Windows\Temp\ on Windows 9x or C:\Documents and Settings\<User_Name>\Local Settings\Temp\ on NT/2000/XP.

Archive/Extract folder: Creates temporary files in the working folder where you open the archive.

User defined temp folder: Creates temporary files as specified in the User defined temp folder box.

egg_violet User defined temp folder (browse)

Use this to specify which folder to save temporary files in when Use defined temp folder is selected.

egg_violet Auto-test archive integrity settings

Select a setting from the drop down menu then check whether or not you wish to be prompted before error tests in the Always prompt for error auto-testing checkbox. Leaving the box unchecked will cause ALZip to check archives as set in the drop down menu without asking you.

ball_small Programs tab

Specify the paths and filenames for optional external programs. Note that these programs are not required for most operations involving archives. External programs are not distributed with ALZip; they must already reside on your computer.

zip-preferences-programs_01

egg_violet Virus scanner

When you specify a virus scanner application in this option, ALZip uses that program to automatically scan for viruses everytime you use ALZip to archive or extract files. The Virus scanner input field should contain the name of the program as it occurs in that program's home directory. The full path name is required if the program does not reside in a folder specified in your system's PATH. (See your Windows documentation for more information on how to change the PATH environment variable.) You can find out what the path and file name to your virus scanner is by right-clicking on the icon you use to start it, choosing Properties, and clicking the Shortcut tab. The complete path with the filename will be listed under Target.

egg_violet Parameters

This field should contain any appropriate parameters to pass to the virus scanner when one is specified in the Virus scanner option. For more information on parameters, refer to your virus scanner's documentation.

egg_violet Use default program to open files

The program specified in this option is used to open files that have no associated program.

In Windows, file extensions are associated, or linked to, programs so that when you double-click on a file, it automatically opens with the correct program. For example, DOC files are commonly associated with Microsoft Word.

For example, if you specify WINWORD.EXE, the Microsoft Word program executable, to view files with unknown or unassociated extensions, Word will be used to open those files.

The default is set to Specify as needed.

When no association exists: The default program is used only when ALZip cannot find any file association for a program to open the file with.

Always: The default program is always used when ALZip opens files in archives.

Specify as needed: ALZip looks for file associations. If it cannot find an association, the Windows Open With dialog appears.

egg_violet Default program

Specify the full path and file name of the default program to use. This is only available when you select the When no association exists or Always option. If the program does not reside in the system PATH, then you will have to specify the complete path and file name.

egg_violet Setting paths and file names

When setting a path and file name for programs, the easiest way is to click the folder icon and browse to the program you want to use. However, you can type in the path and file name by yourself as long as you know where it is.

For example, Notepad resides inside of the system PATH, so you can simply type in notepad.exe. On Windows NT/2000, you can type in %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe, or C:\WINNT\system32\notepad.exe to set the program to Notepad. On Windows 9x, you can type in %SystemRoot%\notepad.exe, or C:\Windows\notepad.exe to set the program to Notepad.
