Quick Start

To start, we'll quickly explain the basics. If you already know the basics, you can skip ahead a bit. This quick start should take you less than 10 minutes.

What is FTP and what is ALFTP?

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is the most popular way to transfer files on the internet.

ALFTP is an easy and intuitive way for you to use FTP to transfer files.

What do I need to know?

Before you use ALFTP, you do need to know a couple things:

  1. ADDRESS: FTP sites have addresses, just like regular web sites, e.g. ftp.somesite.com.
  2. PORT: FTP sites use ports to connect, just like regular web sites, e.g. port #21 is the standard for FTP, while port #80 is the standard for web sites
  3. LOGIN: FTP sites often require logins and passwords to connect to them, similar to some web sites

If you've got those 3 things, you're ready. If you don't have the login, the site you need to access may not require it. In that case try something like "guest" for the login and "my@emailaddress.com" for the password. Otherwise, contact the FTP site owner or administrator for those 3 pieces of information.

How do I connect with ALFTP?

To start ALFTP, click the ALFTP desktop icon or click Start > Program Files > ESTsoft > ALFTP and click on the ALFTP icon.

The site map appears when you start ALFTP:

  1. Click Add Site
  2. Enter the FTP address, login (User ID and Password), and port # in the site map, check Passive Mode, and click OK.
  3. You're connected!

For more information on adding and organizing FTP sites, see the help section on the Site Map.

How do I tranfer files?

Once you are connected, just navigate around the Server Explorer (the FTP server on top) and the Client Explorer (your computer on the bottom) as you would normally do in Windows Explorer, then drag and drop files inbetween the2:
