FTP Server Settings
|
|
| [Caution] Using firewalls, IP sharing, or private IP
addresses (LAN, e.g. 192.168.0.2) may prevent access to your ALFTP server.
You may need to configure your firewall or network for proper operation.
Please consult the documentation for your firewall, IP sharing device or
software, or other device/program and check for information on IP forwarding,
NAT, and ports.
- On the ALFTP toolbar, click
Server to show the FTP server options. Choose Run Server.
- The FTP Server settings dialog appears.
Click anywhere on the screen shot below for more information on that
part.

Server IP address
|
|
This displays your PC's current IP, which other PCs will use to connect
to your ALFTP FTP Server. If you have more than 1 Network Interface Card
(NIC) or Local Area Network (LAN) card, you should change the IP to correspond
to the one you wish to use (i.e. the IP that points to the internet).
You will need your IP address to give to people who you want to allow
to connect to your FTP server. You can also get your IP address by opening
a command window and typing "winipcfg" on Windows 9x or "ipconfig"
on Windows NT systems (NT, 2000, XP, 2003).

|
|
|
Set this to any welcome message you want. It is displayed whenever anyone
logs into your ALFTP FTP Server.
|
|
|
|
- Allow anonymous connections
Check this option to allow anyone to connect to your ALFTP FTP Server.
If you use this option, you should create a folder in your "My
Documents" folder for the FTP site, something like "My ALFTP
Site". (On Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 ALFTP runs under the currently
logged in users permissions.)
- Read Only
Check this option to only allow users to download files. Uncheck
it to allow users to upload files to your ALFTP FTP Server.
[Caution] If you uncheck this option, you should
not check Allow anonymous connections.
- User ID
Users must supply this ID when attempting to login to your ALFTP
FTP Server.
- Password
Users must supply this password when attempting to login to your
ALFTP FTP Server.
- Max connections
Set the maximum number of connections available. Five (5) is the
highest number allowable and one (1) is the lowest number allowable.
All users use the same account and settings when they connect.
- Port
You can change the default FTP port number (21) to any port number
you wish. Valid port numbers range from 0 to 65535. However, you should
generally use higher port numbers to avoid conflicts with other network
applications like email (25, 110, 143, 993, 995) and web surfing (80,
443). If in doubt, use ports above 10,000 (e.g. 12121) and best above
30,000.
If you get an error message like the one below, change the port
number. If the error continues, try using a 5 digit port number under
65535.

|
|
- Home Directory
This is the directory that users will come to when they first connect
to your FTP server. Browse to and select a directory to make it your
FTP home directory.
You can only have 1 home directory and all virtual directories must
either be below the home directory or in a seperate path.
We strongly recommend that you create a directory in your "My
Documents" folder and use that.
- Virtual Directories
Virtual directories show up in the home directory. Click Add and
browse to a directory to add it as a virtual directory in your FTP
server. You must be able to access the directory yourself in order
to successfully use it.
You cannot create a virtual directory in the path above your home
directory.
- Add
Click Add and browse to a directory to create a new virtual directory
in ALFTP.
- Edit
Select a virtual directory and click Edit to change the name as
it appears in the FTP server. Normal naming rules apply.
- Delete
Select a virtual directory and click Delete to immediately delete
the virtual directory. You are not prompted for confirmation.
