  2. Edit

    ALFTP Edit menu

    • Direct Edit

You can open files directly from an FTP server or client in an associated application, or with Notepad if no association exists. You can then make quick edits and save the file back to the FTP server or client. To associate a program with a file extension in ALFTP, open the Preferences dialog, click the Advanced tab, enter a file extension in the File Extension input under Associate Editors, then browse to and select the executable for the program that should open the file extension. This is useful for making quick edits and changes to homepages, web sites, web applications, web services, etc.

Files opened like this do NOT follow the normal windows file extension associations. They need to be custom defined by you.

While you are editing the file and have not closed your editing application, the following dialog is displayed:

Close your editing application to make this disappear and complete the transfer to your FTP server

DO NOT close it. Save your work (usually Ctrl+s) and close your editing application. You are then prompted to confirm that you wish to save your edits to your FTP server:

Click yes to commit your saved edits to the FTP server

In the event your are disconnected or some other event causes the transfer to fail, ALFTP will prompt you to open its backup folder so that you can get your automatically backed up file.

Prompt to open the backup folder

Your backup files will be rename to this format:

      <filename>_<system_date> <system_time>.<file_extension>

All colons (:) are replaced with dashes (-) and your file extension remains the same. You can find the backup file in the ALFTP\Data\EditBackup folder:

      Backups are in this folder

Please note, that if a transfer is interrupted, the file on your FTP server will likely be corrupted and unusable (hence the reason for ALFTP protecting you with a backup).

    • Execute

You can open and run files normally from an FTP server or from your computer (the client) by selecting a file and clicking Execute. This opens the file with the program normally associated with it in Windows. e.g. ALZip will open zip files, ALSee will open jpeg files, and Internet Explorer will open HTML files (assuming you have those programs configure to open those file types when you double click in Windows Explorer).

    • Copy

Copies data, files or folders on the client, so you can paste them to elsewhere on the client.

    • Cut

This places data, files or folders on the client into the Windows clipboard and marks them for deletion after they are pasted.

    • Paste

This copies data, files, or folders from the Windows clipboard to the selected location. Files and folders cannot be copied/pasted to an FTP server.

Note: Copy, Cut and Paste behave as normal in Windows. The limitation is that you cannot use them with files or folders on FTP servers.

    • Select All

Selects all files and folders on an FTP server or client.

    • Select Inverse

      Inverts the currently focused selection.
